Tafsir

(فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ) meaning: with one who will bear witness against them regarding their deeds, and their affirmation of their messengers or their denial of them.

(فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ) The *Ummah* (nation/community) here refers to those to whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent, both believers and disbelievers.

(فَكَيْفَ) meaning: So what will be the situation, and what will they do, when We bring from every nation a witness, meaning: its prophet, who will testify against them regarding what they did? (وَجِئْنَا بِكَ) O Muhammad, (عَلَى هَؤُلاءِ شَهِيدًا) as a witness over them, testifying against all nations, against those whom he saw and those whom he did not see.

The Prophets will come on the Day of Resurrection, and the *Ummah* of Muhammad (peace be upon him) will bear witness for them. They will say: "Our Lord, we bear witness that they have conveyed (the message)," just as they bore witness in this world to the conveyance.

The *shahīd* (witness) is the prophet of the *Ummah*, and he testifies that he has conveyed the message to his *Ummah*.

He testifies against his entire *Ummah* that he conveyed to them that by which the proof is established against them.

Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will call him (the Prophet) to bear witness against his *Ummah* on the Day of Resurrection that he conveyed the clear message. This is why he (peace and blessings be upon him) called them to bear witness so that they would affirm this for themselves. He called them to bear witness during the Farewell Pilgrimage when he addressed them and said: "Have I conveyed (the message)?" They said: "Yes." Then he raised his finger to the sky and pointed it towards the people, saying: "O Allah, bear witness!" three times. "Have I conveyed (the message)?" They said: "Yes." He said: "O Allah, bear witness! Have I conveyed (the message)?" They said: "Yes." He said: "O Allah, bear witness!"

It is narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited this verse, his eyes would overflow with tears.

Among the benefits of this verse is that on the Day of Resurrection, witnesses will be established against people, testifying against them that the message was conveyed to them.

Among the benefits of this verse is that every Messenger will bear witness against his people that he conveyed the message to them; because of His saying: (فَكَيْفَ إِذَا جِئْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ).
