Surah 5 • Verse 43

Tafsir

And how do these Jews, O Muhammad, make you a judge between them, accepting you as an arbiter, when they have the Torah with them, in which is the judgment of Allah?

This is a reprimand from Him, glorified be He, to the Jews concerning whom this verse was revealed.

The origin of "al-tawalli `an al-shay'" (turning away from something) is to depart from it.

Their turning away is their abandonment of what is in the Book of Allah, despite its clear guidance.

This is not the action of the people of faith.

Meaning, they will never believe.
