This address is for everyone.

(وَتَرَى كَثِيرًا مِنْهُمْ) The address is for everyone who hears.

He said: (وَتَرَى كَثِيرًا مِنْهُمْ) and the reason is that not all of them used to do that; rather, some of them would feel ashamed and thus refrain.

Al-Kalbi said: Not all of them used to do that.

(وَتَرَى كَثِيرًا مِنْهُمْ) meaning from the Jews and hypocrites (يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ) meaning they hasten in sins and transgression.

Al-Ithm (sin) is what they concealed of faith and the effort towards faith.

(يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْإِثْمِ) Al-Ithm (sin) is everything related to the right of Allah, (وَالْعُدْوَانِ) is what relates to the right of human beings.

Al-Ithm (sin): the concealment of religious matters, (وَالْعُدْوَانِ) meaning the oppression of people.

(وَأَكْلِهِمُ السُّحْتَ) meaning: the unlawful... Al-Suht (ill-gotten gain): every unlawful earning is suht.

Whoever hastens in sin and transgression and consumes ill-gotten gain (suht), then he bears a resemblance to the Jews.
