(Indeed, a people before you asked such questions, then they became disbelievers thereby.) (5:102)
﴿قَدْ سَأَلَهَا قَوْمٌ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ ثُمَّ أَصْبَحُوا بِهَا كَافِرِينَ﴾ means that a people before you asked for signs, and when Allah granted them these signs, they became deniers of them.
Allah the Almighty warned the believers, through His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), not to follow the path of the nations before them who perished due to their disbelief in Allah's signs when they came to them.
He forbade them from asking for things similar to what the Christians asked for regarding the table (Al-Ma'idah), after which they became disbelievers in it. Thus, Allah forbade such questioning.
