Allah the Almighty encouraged the believers to pay little heed to the secret talks of their enemies, and that these talks will not harm them as long as they persevere in His commandments and rely upon Him.
(إِنَّمَا النَّجْوَى مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ) meaning: the one who beautifies this secret talk with evil and incites it is Satan.
He (Allah) commanded them to engage in secret talks for good deeds, so that they may gain strength through social cohesion, and increase in faith and good works thereby.
Ibn Kathir said: The Sunnah has indeed forbidden secret talks (najwa) when they cause distress to a believer. Imam Ahmad narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When you are three, two of you should not converse secretly to the exclusion of your companion, for that would grieve him." (Narrated by both Bukhari and Muslim).
And from Ibn Umar, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When you are three, two of you should not converse secretly to the exclusion of the third, except with his permission, for that would grieve him." (Muslim exclusively narrated it).
(لِيَحْزُنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا) by their imagining that some calamity has befallen them. (وَلَيْسَ) meaning Satan or the secret talk (بِضَارِّهِمْ) harming the believers (شَيْئًا إِلا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ) except by His will. (وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلْ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ) and they should not care about their secret talks.
Allah forbade Muslims from engaging in secret talks among themselves for fear of tearing hearts apart, because Satan causes mischief between them and each of them thinks ill of his brother.
Secret talk is one of Satan's ways to influence believers, to grieve them and to instill malice in their hearts against one another.
Do not participate with Satan in his futile endeavor to grieve the hearts of those around you!
Ibn Uthaymeen said in its interpretation: Everything that brings worry, sorrow, and grief, Allah wants us to avoid it.
The reliance (tawakkul) of a servant is according to his faith.
This indicates that reliance on Allah is a great honor whose blessings are attained only by the people of faith.
