Humiliation from Allah's punishment will overwhelm them.
(خَاشِعَةً): Meaning submissive, humble (أَبْصَارُهُمْ): their gazes, because what is in the heart is known through the eyes. This is because the believers will raise their heads, and their faces will be brighter than the sun, while the faces of the disbelievers and hypocrites will be black and dark.
(تَرْهَقُهُمْ): Meaning it will cover them and overpower them, (ذِلَّةٌ): meaning a great humiliation.
This refers to the call to prayer (adhan) in the worldly life, and they were commanded to perform the obligatory prayers.
More than one of the Tabi'in (successors) said that this specifically refers to those who lag behind from congregational prayer among this Ummah, to the extent that some of them would swear by that.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: It is the man who hears the adhan but does not respond to the prayer.
Meaning they were healthy and sound during life, i.e., in good health.
Ka'b al-Ahbar said: By Allah, this verse was revealed only concerning those who miss congregational prayers.
It means that in this world, they were called to prostrate to Him, and they were in good health, with no impediment preventing them from doing so, and no barrier standing between them and it.
Ibn al-Jawzi said: In this is a warning to whoever abandons congregational prayer.
Meaning there was no impediment preventing them from it.
