(And do not lose heart and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are believers.) (3:139)
He encouraged the hearts of the people of faith and consoled them for what befell them.
(And do not lose heart and do not grieve): Whoever is a believer must not lose heart or grieve, due to his trust in Allah Almighty.
(And do not lose heart and do not grieve): This is an encouragement for the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to strive [in the path of Allah].
(And do not lose heart and do not grieve): Encouragement for the believers, strengthening their hearts, and consolation for what befell them on the Day of Uhud, such as killing and wounds.
(And do not lose heart): Meaning, to continue on the path of Allah.
Allah, Transcendent and Exalted, forbids His believing servants from weakness in their striving and from grief over what has passed.
(And do not lose heart): Meaning, do not weaken, do not be cowardly, and do not be incapable against your enemy. (And do not grieve) over what befell you of killing and defeat on the Day of Uhud. (And you will be superior) in the end.
A person rises and becomes superior according to the measure of his faith. (And you will be superior if you are believers.) And he is lowered according to the measure of his following his desires: (and he followed his desires, so he fell into ruin.)
Whoever is a believer, it is not befitting for him to weaken in upholding and supporting the religion.
(And you will be superior if you are believers): Honor and superiority belong to the people of faith.
An encouragement for the Ummah not to weaken or grieve, because they are the superior ones.
(And you will be superior): Your role is higher, your effort is nobler, and your thought is more refined... You are the guides for all of humanity.
(And you will be superior if you are believers): Allah desires from you a sense of superiority in your "faith," and He does not desire from you a sense of superiority in your "worldly life." Allah Almighty said, condemning worldly superiority: (That Home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.) (28:83)
(And you will be superior): Your state is that you are higher in status than them, for you are upon the truth, and they are upon falsehood.
The people of falsehood, even if their falsehood swells, their ultimate end is weakness, and the ultimate end of the people of truth is superiority, strength, and elevation.
Faith increases strength, so it does not lead to weakness.
Faith necessitates strength of heart... Faith inevitably entails superiority... The more the faith of the Ummah increases, the more its superiority increases... Your superiority is commensurate with the faith you possess.
The believer is honored, triumphant, supported, victorious, and sufficient, if he truly embodies faith.
Beware of faltering resolve, weak will, intense sorrow, and depression.
(If you are believers): Meaning, the promise will not be realized except through faith, so adhere to it.
(If you are believers): Meaning, dominance and superiority will only be for the believers, so hold firm to faith.
(If you are believers): Ibn Ashour said: This was intended to stir their zeal for faith.
