92- SURAH AL-LAYL

SURAH AL-LAYL: There is a difference of opinion regarding whether it is Meccan or Medinan, but the majority holds that it is Meccan.

It is counted as the ninth in the order of revelation of surahs, revealed after Surah Al-A'la and before Surah Al-Fajr.

It contains an explanation of the honor of the believers and the virtues of their deeds, and the dispraise of the polytheists and their evils.

Ibn Abbas said: "Indeed, I say that this Surah was revealed concerning generosity and stinginess: (وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ)."

Allah swears by some of His creations to draw humanity's attention to the importance of this creation in demonstrating Allah's power, so that man may reflect on His (Allah's) power, glory be to Him... And all of that contains an invitation to reflect on the power of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.

(وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ) (1)

Surah Al-Layl begins with a remarkable oath: (وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ).

He swore by that which indicates the wonders of His creation, as the alternation of night and day reveals a sign of Allah's power and wisdom.

(وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ): meaning the night that covers with its darkness, and it alludes to meanings of tranquility and following desires for those whose hearts are heedless of guidance.

(وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ): an oath by the time in which the deeds of servants occur, where they differ between obedience and disobedience.

(وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ): meaning it covers creation with its darkness, so everyone settles into their refuge and abode, and servants rest from toil and fatigue.
