Those who say that to them are the people of faith, striving for their guidance, and perhaps some of them might have been guided.

The intent is: Repent from hypocrisy, make your faith sincere, and ask the Messenger of Allah to seek forgiveness for your past transgressions.

(وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ): When their disgrace is revealed, in the form of advice.

(تَعَالَوْا): Meaning, come forward, (يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ): Meaning, he would pray to Allah for you, and ask Him to conceal your faults.

(وَإِذَا قِيلَ) to these hypocrites: (تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ) for what has emanated from you, so that your conditions may improve, and your deeds be accepted, they would refuse vehemently.

(وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ): Meaning, if one of the believers said to them: What has been revealed in the Qur'an concerning you has indeed been revealed, so repent to Allah and His Messenger, and come, so that the Messenger of Allah may seek forgiveness for you, (لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ): Meaning, they turned their heads in mockery of that.

Among the signs of these hypocrites is that when they are called to the path of truth, they turn away.

(لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ): Turning heads means inclining them to a side other than the speaker's face, showing dislike and turning away from his words.

(لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ): A metaphor for arrogance and turning away.

(لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ): Meaning, they turned away, (وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ): Meaning, with the eye of insight, (يَصُدُّونَ): From the religion of Allah and the efforts of His Prophet (peace be upon him).

(وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ): Meaning, they turn away from faith and the effort towards faith.

(وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ): They turn away from what they are called to, (وَهُمْ مُسْتَكْبِرُونَ): Meaning, they are arrogant regarding faith.

Fleeing from gatherings of remembrance (dhikr) is one of the characteristics of hypocrites, so reflect on your state if you are invited to attend them.

Nothing will awaken them from their stupor except the heat of the punishment they will face.
