"Then let them produce a discourse like it," in its composition and the beauty of its eloquence.
So let them produce something like this Qur'an in its composition, its wondrous style, the beauty of its exposition, and the excellence of its guidance.
"Then let them produce a discourse like it," meaning: in the profound effort of guidance that it contains between its covers.
As long as their hearts do not perceive the reality of this profound effort, He challenges them to produce something similar to it.
