(And he had no party to help him other than Allah, nor was he able to help himself.) (18:43)
(And he had no party to help him other than Allah): No group, nor clan, nor wealth, nor children could benefit or help him; rather, he was not even able to help himself.
His supporters, companions, and bad company abandoned him when they saw what befell him.
Everyone who used to flatter him washed their hands of him when his wealth was destroyed.
Bad company and those who seek worldly gain always flee from the losers and disperse from around them.
(And he had no party to help him): So who would help you if you were an enemy of Allah?
The meaning of (to help him): they would be able to help him and protect him from the punishment of Allah.
Who would dare to help him if the punishment of Allah encompassed him or a calamity befell him?
Meaning, he had no group. Mujahid said: "It is the clan to whose help one resorts."
(And he had no party to help him other than Allah): When He denied him any helping party in this world, He also denied him the ability to help himself in the Hereafter (nor was he able to help himself).
(able to help himself), meaning: he was not able to help himself in the Hereafter.
He did not benefit from the invitation (to faith) because it encountered a hardened heart.
Did the owner of the two gardens find guidance? There is a difference of opinion among the exegetes. If we say: he did not find guidance, then the secret is his failure to leave the corrupt environment... And if we say: he found guidance, then the reason for that was his companion's supplication against his garden for Allah to destroy it, for the sake of his repentance and guidance. This difference teaches us that the environment and supplication have a great impact on guiding a person towards guidance.
