(إِنَّكُمْ لَفِي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍ (8))
(Indeed, you are in a differing statement/discourse.) This refers to the matter of the occurrence of the Day of Judgment.
(إِنَّكُمْ لَفِي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍ) meaning, you are in a differing matter, regarding the effort (or message) of the Qur'an, so some affirm it and others deny it.
(إِنَّكُمْ لَفِي قَوْلٍ مُخْتَلِفٍ): meaning, you are not firm upon one matter, oscillating between affirming this effort (or message) and denying it.
The "differing statement" refers to their sayings regarding the Qur'an, and regarding the effort (or message) of the Qur'an, and regarding the Prophet (peace be upon him).
When they denied the truth, their doctrines, opinions, paths, and statements differed.
The truth is one thing and a straight path. Whoever deviates from it will find their paths and doctrines diverging.
